Assessing the odds – Who will be our Glastonbury Festival headliners in 2020?

Other than Diana Ross, it remains unclear which legendary bands and artists will take to the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival 2020

Who will take to the Pyramid Stage for Glasto’s landmark 50th anniversary?

As Elton John has today been ruled out of the running to be amongst the Glastonbury Festival headliners in 2020 Festival Empire takes a comprehensive look at those still in the running.

Using all the latest odds from Ladbrokes (As of 24/10/19) we’ll dissect the list, give our opinion on whether or not they’re worthy of headlining the iconic festival’s 50th anniversary and even remind everyone of those who definitely won’t be playing in 2020.

Who won’t be at Worthy Farm next year?

Everyone’s favourite camp uncle Elton John unfortunately won’t be headlining Glastonbury this year, the legendary artist has announced a brand new American farewell tour that clashes with the festival.

Elton’s new Yellow Brick Road tour dates will see him play the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas on 26-27 June next year.

Until an announcement has been officially made we can’t 100% rule anyone out with absolute certainty. There could be a very left field inclusion earlier on in the week, especially considering festival organisers have said they have got some surprises up their sleeves… However this does seem a little too far reaching.

Elton John has been ruled out as a Glastonbury Festival headliner due to conflicting dates with his Yellow Brick Road tour in the States.

Two other bands that have been ruled out by Emily Eavis at a recent event are legendary duo Fleetwood Mac and Led Zeppelin, much to the disappointment of fans across the country.

However, it is worth noting that Fleetwood Mac have been dropping some interesting hints earlier this year about having a big field to play in, so we do expect to see them somewhere in 2020.

Who are the bookies favourites to headline?

Before we go into the list, we already know that Diana Ross is confirmed for the legends slot on the Sunday night.

The American Soul icon who found fame with Motown group The Supremes back in the 1960s was originally expected to play Glastonbury in 2017, however her performance didn’t materialise due to scheduling clashes.

So, to the main event… Who could we see as our Glastonbury Festival Headliners? Here’s your current Glastonbury Festival headliners, starting with the number one favourite first.

Paul McCartney (4/6)

Macca is the bookies favourite right now, and it comes as no surprise as the former Beatles frontman has openly discussed the possibility on national radio saying:

“I mean people are saying that it would be good if I did it, so I’m starting to think about whether I can or whether it would be a good thing. My kids are saying ‘Dad we’ve got to talk about Glastonbury’ and I think I know what they mean…

“So they go every year, like a lot of people these days, and it is a great festival and we played there quite a long time ago so, maybe it is time to go back, I don’t know, I’d have to put a few things in place and try and do that but it’s starting to become some sort of remote possibility.”

Kendrick Lamar (8/11)

Kendrick Lamar is a potential Glastonbury Festival headliner

US Rapper Kendrick Lamar was top of the bookies odds to headline Glastonbury last year, however it wasn’t to be at the time. This year could well be the year the Compton-born lyricist tears apart the Pyramid Stage.

Taylor Swift (8/11)

On even footings with Kendrick as far as the odds go, everyone’s favourite pop-star is due to soon announce UK dates for ‘Lovers Tour’, and of course with any Summer-time tour comes the rumours of a festival appearance… Even if Ed Sheeran has said she doesn’t enjoy playing festivals, we’re still rooting for an appearance.

Aerosmith (6/5)

Aerosmith are potential Glastonbury Festival headliners

We genuinely think this one would come as quite a shock, whilst the iconic American rockers are no stranger to English music festivals, having headlined Download Festival back in 2017, they’re not a band that were on our radar for Glasto. However, we’d totally walk their way if they were to play the Pyramid.

Foals (2/1)

Foals are potential Glastonbury Festival headliners

Many fans have called for Oxford rock band Foals to headline Glastonbury Festival in the past, and why not… They can certainly bring their A-game when required. Last year their secret set at Glastonbury Festival swarmed by thousands of fans, despite technical difficulties, they were many fans highlight of the weekend.

The 1975 (2/1)

The 1975 are potential Glastonbury Festival headliners

There’s no denying it, the 1975 have had an incredible 2019, headlining both Radio 1’s Big Weekend and Reading and Leeds Festival alongside Post Malone and Twenty One Pilots. Eavis has already stated she love to have them in attendance… So time will only tell.

Who else is in the running to headline Glastonbury Festival?

Of course, the list is pretty extensive, there’s some big names further down the list… In order other potential headliners are: Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, Queen and Adam Lambert, Spice Girls, The Kinks, Rolling Stones, Bruce Springteen, Lady Gaga and Madonna.

Other acts have also thrown their hat in ring such as Biffy Clyro who have stated they’re waiting for the call. Robbie Williams has also made quite the song and dance about wanting to headline in 2020.

  1. The two obvious bands they should br considering are Pearl Jam and Tool but I think this is Taylor Swift’s year as she is doing all the other big European festivals.
